Polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)

Polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) is a biodegradable, thermoplastic, synthetic aliphatic polyester polymer, extensively used biopolymers nowadays. Amongst all the biopolymers, the biodegradable polymer poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) has immense potential as a drug delivery carrier and as scaffolds for tissue engineering due to its favourable properties like good mechanical and chemical strength and highly biocompatible as it undergoes non-enzymatic hydrolysis into nontoxic natural metabolites which are eliminated via the respiratory system. It is extensively used as delivery vehicles for drugs, proteins and various other macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, Proteins and peptides for sustained drug delivery at desirable doses by implantation without surgical procedures. It is also used into versatile formulations, membranes, hydrogels, nanoparticles, microparticles, other large number of applications in nano-medicine and nano-particle, sutures, stents, bio-sensors in medical and pharmaceutical industries.
